As the festivities / holiday high wanes, it is time to get back in shape and back to a healthier eating habit. During festivities / holidays we all put our body through the feasting grind and now it needs restoration. When more sugar is ingested, your body produces more insulin, which in turn puts a strain on your pancreas. In the long term, this can cause some serious conditions such as chronic fatigue, weight gain and diabetes. Likewise high salt intake increases blood pressure, a major risk factor for stroke and heart disease.
So what should we do? should we jump start our workour sessions / go for that long run or hit the gym with all we have?????
No, do not step back on the scales right away. Give your body a few days to settle back into its normal routine, and take baby steps to reduce your appetite and craving for sugar and sodium. Ease the stress on your body, which means better health / sleep and a happy long life . Below are some tried and tested ways to recharge your body ladies and get back to normal:
5 ways to recharge your body:
1. Dine-in at Home - Stay away from cafes and restaurants for a while, and get back to cooking. When you eat at home, you tend to prepare or at least have the option of preparing healthy meals that are low in fat, sugar and sodium.
2. Eat fresh produce - Load up on vegetables, not just the green types but the colourful vegetables as well. They are full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, all of which can help to rebalance and nourish your body. Replace that dessert / sugar craving with a fruit.
3. Add zest to your water - Take a break from caffeine and instead squeeze half a lemon into a glass of warm water and down it first thing in the morning. This is believed to help detox your liver and give your skin a Vitamin C boost.
4. Get enough rest - Aim for at least 7 hours of sleep every night. Not only does it give your brain and body time to recharge, it also doubles up as time for your liver to do its job of filtering waste and toxins. Furthermore sleep deprivation is known to wreak havoc on your hormones, causing you to eat more and contribute to significant weight gain.
5. Sweat it out - If your exercise routine came to a halt during the festival / holiday season, it is time to get back to work. Schedule time for exercise be it a simple walk around the block or a high intensity Zumba session .
So let's get going ladies, let's get ready to dazzle the next festival or our favourite holiday destination.
